Free Law Project Now Offers Free Group Memberships for Legal Services Organizations
Keeping families in their homes. Protecting survivors of domestic violence. Securing public benefits for people in need. Freeing individuals from the crushing burden of predatory debt. Legal aid attorneys do this work with very little margin for error and even less budget.
They need real-time access to rulings. They need to track cases. They need the same research tools as any other attorney practicing law. What they often don't have is the budget to pay for them.
Access to justice isn't just our mission statement. It shapes the tools we build, the data we open, and the communities we build for. Today, we're acting on that commitment.
Free Law Project is launching the Legal Services Organization Group Membership, a free group membership tier for nonprofit civil legal aid offices and legal services organizations working on the frontlines of access to justice. The membership is free, covers your entire organization, and includes the legal research and CourtListener capabilities that legal aid advocates need most.
What the membership includes
Each individual member within the organization will receive Tier 1 membership benefits:
- Unlimited docket alerts, so your team never misses a filing in the cases you're tracking
- Unlimited real-time opinion search alerts for federal courts and courts of last resort in all 50 states, so a new ruling that changes the picture for your clients reaches you the moment it's published
- API access at rates of 10 calls per minute, 75 calls per hour, and 300 calls per day, enabling your organization to connect CourtListener to AI tools like Claude and ChatGPT
- RECAP search alerts (five real-time and 10 daily, weekly, or monthly) to monitor federal dockets
- 15 requests in our Pray & Pay system, which lets you crowdsource the cost of pulling documents from PACER
API access matters more than it might sound. CourtListener is now available as a source inside Claude and other AI assistants through our CourtListener MCP integration. With this membership, legal aid advocates can use it to research case law, track citations, and monitor developments, inside the AI tools their organizations are already exploring, at no cost.
Who this is for
This membership is designed for nonprofit legal services organizations, including civil legal aid offices. It is intended for organizations using CourtListener to support their legal work, not for building tools or running larger technology projects that might otherwise be supported by grant funding. If you are unsure whether your organization qualifies, contact our memberships team before applying.
If your organization is based outside the United States, this group membership category is not currently available, although paid group memberships and individual memberships are open to all.
Why this matters
Free Law Project's mission is to make the legal ecosystem more equitable through technology and open data. That means making sure that the people doing the hardest access to justice work in America can use our tools. Legal aid attorneys and advocates represent clients who have no other options. They deserve the same powerful legal research tools as the most well-resourced firms in the country.
This membership is how we make that real.
Apply today
If your organization qualifies, we invite you to apply for an LSO Group Membership. The person who completes the form becomes the group administrator and can manage seats for their colleagues. More information about how to manage group memberships is available in the FLP wiki.
